Blog Tour: Guest Writer Lori Toland

What is Seduction to an erotic paranormal author? That is my question for Lori Toland, author of 'Soul Seduction' and featured author of Virtual Book Tour presented by Goddess Fish Promotions. Lori is my Guest Writer today at The Wytch's Mirror and it's my stop of the tour. Thank you Lori for being here!

Seduction is a game we all love to play and in erotic romance, it's the best part. And of course, Luke is a master at seduction. He's a wealthy playboy intent on seducing Ashlee. But his feelings have always been more than just a quick fling with his sexy new neighbor.

Ashlee IS beautiful but she is much more than just a pretty face to him. She intrigues Luke from their first meeting, alluding to her second job when he sees her coming in all dirty and sweaty in the wee hours of the morning. She's cute and funny but beneath the surface, there is something more.

Even though she tells him no, he knows she wants him. She's constantly teasing him, and then pushing him away and denying them both of the pleasure each craves. The lines between fantasy and reality are blurring and the need to be together is growing.Until he finds out her virginity means more than just saving herself for a one true love. It means life and death to Ashlee. But he would do anything to protect her, including following her into battle, even if it means sacrificing himself.

I hope you enjoy the book! Thanks for having me by.

My View and Review
Soul Seduction is an Erotic Urban Fantasy written by author Lori Toland released November 29, 2011!

She's a demon killer, and he...he is HOT! Ash is not your typical virgin by a long shot. Ash is not anything close to the girl next door. This leading lady is sexy hot and from the first word you can feel her energy jumping right off the pages at you. The language is steamy, sexy, vibrant, and catchy. We are all adults here right? No children allowed for this bed time story. A bed time story YES, and perfectly so as long as you can take a few demons that need slaying along with your hot erotic romance.

Hot details and scenes made for adults, tastefully and brilliantly placed keeping things moving, thrilling and exciting!

The story really is unique, and not ordinary. It is erotica but also fun and just the right amount of weird to keep the interest of paranormal lovers. Lori Toland writes with sharp tones that make her characters smart. The actions and dialogue are believable and gripping. It is not the physical description of Ashlee that solely makes her sexy or sensual. It is however, her actions and how she carries herself through out trials and temptations. She is a demon slayer and that is not going to be the most glamorous job, right? I mean those long nails have to get chipped now and then. What about the hair? Is there any product on the market for that? The author mastered this very well, making the leading lady strong, sexy, and seductive even if killing demons is more of a scary thing.

Soul Seduction is one of those books you will not want to put down. The interaction between the characters is always interesting. I absolutely loved the story and I am certain you will too.

Book Review: The Healer's Dance

The Healer's Dance
by Jeanette Raleigh

My view and review:
My personal favorite part of The Healer's Dance is when Emily actually dances. The magical feeling and mythical details are expressive and captivating. To find that kind of peace in one's passion, gift, and talent is a tremendous thing and Emily's dance... what she accomplishes on a personal level... is what drove this story for me. That part is a beautiful burst of energy and I absolutely love that take on who Emily is meant to be, and her purpose in all of the story.

Two God touched paladins and accompanied, or escorted as it may be, by the sweet Emily. Emily is a healer and acting as guardian or protector of Stephan, who is one of the paladins. Luke the other paladin is a
close connection of the three however it is Stephan that Emily has dreamed of and it is Stephan that she is sent to save. Even with that knowledge and with her 'gifts' or healing powers and magic, she and
Stephan both do not foresee the bond they will build together before they are thrown into their growing passions.

The two paladins in The Healer's Dance are the brute strength, and they are the fighters in the minor physical confrontations along the way. Emily is not a fighter by any means. Emily uses magic to assist and heal. All in all, it is a really great combination and the three compliment each other quite nicely.

While The Healer's Dance is noted as a Young Adult Fantasy, I would add with that genre it is magical, with natural elements, being mystical and mythical. The story is beautifully and richly written with vivid characters. I would call this more of a magical fantasy with a romantic love story thrown in.

The Healer's Dance by Jeanette Raleigh
“The wind-goddess sent me a dream of your death. I came to save you.”

The first time Stefan hears these words, he laughs. After Emily’s warning saves his life, Stefan invites her to travel with him. He draws ever closer to the prairie woman whose lonely life as an outcast leaves her unfit for society while her gifts have forced her to interact with those she must save.

Stefan and Emily are pulled into a passionate and endearing love, but Emily is kidnapped and Stefan must use all of his wits to save her.

Book Review: A Ranger's Tale

A Ranger's Tale
by Mysti Parker

My view and review: Reading the title at first glance, one might think A Ranger's Tale is a western or a cowboy story, or even a tale of living life on the prairie, as ranger might imply. The alluring and charming cover excites and entices one to look a little deeper. Every one knows we can not judge a book by it's cover, but in this case I found it very fitting and I absolutely love the cover. When I opened the book on my
nook, it was soon revealed this is a fantasy, but not a fairy tale.
This is a story of magic, wizardry if you will, with elves, and one with a bit more than a young adult feel to it.

When I am not reading something to scare me, as horror really is my thing, I adore and do not get enough of the elven world. A Ranger's Tale could be considered a fairy tale but I do believe the elven community might have something to say about it. All fantasy lovers know the different classes of fantasy figures, be it hobbit, elf, wizard, or fae and the importance each play in the balance. In A Ranger's Tale we are introduced to a corner of that realm, and it is beautifully named Tallenmere.

A Ranger's Tale deals with what some would say are every day human issues, such as parents that are completely frustrated and genuinely concerned about the well being of their child. A young person not really knowing what they want to do with their life, and completely disagreeing with what her parents have in mind and expect.Although being a mage sounds really incredible, it does not sound so appealing to the leading character here. How these characters cope and deal with their problems are far from how a human would consider appropriate. However, when elements of wizardry and magic are involved, severe measures will be taken, and then the story is free to explode with a level of acceptance that otherwise might not work. Even with the misfortunes, the story is a warm and tender fantasy.

Who would not love to jump right into that world? Yes, to live a fantasy life in a very seemingly magical world. In this story the characters are given enough trials and tribulations to find good reason to wish for anything and any place other then their world of Tallenmere.

This really is a perfect fantasy to fall away with. A Ranger's Tale is not a typical love story and contains many aspects that will drive and entertain alone without the romantic episodes. The characters are just incredibly wonderful and it is easy to fall in love with them, and want to be them, even with their woes. If you enjoy a thrilling fantasy, magic, mystical, elfish worlds, and romance, you will absolutely love A Ranger's Tale by Mysti Parker.

Author Interview: Sally Dubats

Merry Meet Sally! I am so proud and honored to feature you. Your spirit and your work are both truly amazing and I deeply appreciate you taking the time to talk with me. "The Grimoire Chronicles: Veil Between Worlds" is the subject of our interview today, but I am also really excited about "Natural Magick: Inside the Well-Stocked Cupboard" Would you like to share some about that one as well? Did you mention to me that it would be available as an ebook?

Merry Meet, Cynthia, and thank you so much for hosting me! Yes! My original non-fiction will soon be an e-book. It was originally published through Kensington, and I’ve just now gotten the rights back and am in the process of making it available as an e-book. Just so there is no confusion, “Natural Magick: Inside the Well-Stocked Witch’s Cupboard” was also released as “Natural Magick: The Essential Witch’s Grimoire”, which is something the publisher decided to do. I wrote that book because I felt a need for people to know how to create their own energy, circle, sense of spiritual, etc., as well as have a book of correspondences, and to have it all in one book rather than have to go to several for one ritual or spell.

For those that are not familiar with a Grimoire, could you explain and maybe share a little about your own personal Grimoire or Book of Shadows?

A Grimoire is a book of magick, or diary of magick, or personally created reference book. It can be personal or belong to a coven. It’s also called a Book of Shadows. I think having a grimoire is an excellent way to keep the best of your spell work. I actually haven’t heard anyone talk about this before, but I think part of the magick in a grimoire can be bringing back the sense of sacred power when you revisit spells. It’s like looking at a photo album of a really great vacation. You remember the great time you had, and it literally changes your chemistry. When you look at spells you’ve done, you really do feel the originally channeled energy of those spells. My magick constantly changes and evolves, and so does my Book of Shadows. I believe there is power in handwriting. I do have a grimoire, and honestly I still find index cards the best way to keep my correspondences!

I love your article 'Witch and Famous' (Famous Witches Who Never Made It Out of the Broom Closet) Although I'm not famous, I'm probably still stuck in the closet on a lot of levels. Was it difficult for you to step out of the closet? And, do you have any advice for those of us still a little shy about stepping out all the way?

That’s a really, really tough one, and a completely personal decision for each individual to weigh. There are still people who lose jobs, don’t see family anymore, and lose friends. It’s one of the main reasons I wrote “The Grimoire Chronicles”. I want to get the word out about who we are and what we’re all about to bring understanding, and do it in a fun way that people can relate to. My blog is lighthearted. The “broom closet” subject had come up so much lately that I wanted to change the harsh energy. Was it hard for me? My parents are open and loving, so that wasn’t an issue. My friends simply aren’t friends if they don’t accept who I am. I’ve had it pretty easy as far as broom closets go, which is lucky. And for other people, I think they just need to go with their hearts. If a friend needs help, perhaps let them know that when you light a candle it’s a little different when other people light candles, as in candle magick, and see if they’re open. Work is another issue, and maybe it’s no one’s business at work, but that’s up to the individual. I took a lot of good-natured flack for being a Witch at some places I’ve worked, and then co-workers end up asking for flu remedies or even spells.

Although I may not be completely out of the broom closet, I do have practices that are tell tell signs of my spirituality. Do you have any recognizable traits that you share with the world and that make you Witch and Famous?

Hahaha… I don’t know that I’m “Witch and Famous” ;) I’m pretty much a jeans and shirts person. I don’t wear lots of jewelry, etc., and I think that’s part of the previous question. If I happen to wear or carry stones or crystals, I will explain why, but that’s usually with friends or family. I don’t think someone at a grocery store would know I’m Wiccan, but then I don’t know their religion either unless they’re wearing something that advertises what they believe.

Although we are talking about fiction, from a true Pagan and Witch, your perspective while writing would be a real one and one of value for readers of this genre. What influences did you most count on while writing 'The Grimoire Chronicles'?

First and foremost, I wanted to write a fun, fast-paced, exciting Wiccan story. There isn’t enough of it out there! I wanted to get away from the Hollywood style of Witch. I wanted to write something real, about real magick, so I used spells that I’ve personally used, and will continue to do so in the remainder of the books. Also, there’s a deep psychology with Cassie, my main character. She feels different, but she also keeps herself distant from others. I think that’s what a lot of people do, thinking that other people will judge them -- it applies to everyone, not just Wiccans, or Witches. I also wanted to write about a mind-set that creates positive things in life. If there’s a problem, tackle it!

Is there a particular memory or inspiration that served as your muse while developing the story for 'The Grimoire chronicles'?

Ugh. Yes. High school was awful for me, and I know now that it didn’t have to be. Some of it was great, but a lot of it was really awful. I get to resolve some of those old issues through my character Cassie. There are other things that are hard for her, of course, but she learns lessons earlier than I did! With that, I sort of re-wrote and healed my past. And bullying has gotten out of control. I tried to delve into why kids are so mean -- and getting meaner.

Pagans and Witches are very much misunderstood in our world. One of the reasons I am fascinated with your work is the message you are sending and sharing "who we really are". What do you think the biggest misconception is about those that walk our path, and how can we rectify it?

The biggest misconception is that old “Devil” question. Of course, the Devil is a Christian deity, so it’s not part of our religion. Getting that out of the way - when non-magickal people hear about Witches for the first time, they think we’re absolutely delusional because they don’t have an understanding of what real magick is! I think the world is becoming more open-minded with meditative visualization (definitely part of magick) and affirmations (incantations), and so the concept of drawing success, love, prosperity, or healing is less judged.

Who are your influences that drive your writing and are those influences different when it comes to your own personal spirituality?
Honestly, every book I’ve ever read influences my writing! That might sound like a cop-out, but it’s true. I really like clean, simple writing that gets to the point, tells a great story, and doesn’t “dawdle”! My reading is all over the place: classics, YA, historical novels, thrillers if they’re not too thrilling (um, gory)! I liked “The Da Vinci Code” a lot, and I loved “The Paris Wife”. I literally cannot count the “spiritual books” I’ve read. I read everything with the understanding that everything we *think* we know could be wrong. Everything. I’ve read books on many religions other than Wicca including Hindu, Taoist, Buddhism. They’ve all shaped my beliefs. And all of these influences are in my book.

Being that 'The Grimoire Chronicles' is a series, when can we expectthe next book?

The next book is “The Grimoire Chronicles: Winter Solstice”, so you can expect it some time before Yule!

Can you share anything about the next book of the series, such as an excerpt or a teaser?

“Yule” is about the fight between the Oak King and the Holly King. I’m using that as a premise for conflict with Trenton. Since you asked, you’ll be the first to have a teaser! To anyone reading this: If you haven’t read the first book in the series, don’t read the next teaser!! And, Cynthia, thank you so very much for the opportunity to talk with you! I love your website!

Thank so much Sally! I appreciate your books and I appreciate you being here at The Wytch's Mirror with me today. Thank you again for allowing me share Chapter One of your coming release "The Grimoire Chronicles: Winter Solstice" (visit the link to read excerpt)

Guest Writer Sheenah Freitas

Today is my stop of the virtual book tour for Sheenah Freitas, author of The Chosen. The Wytch's Mirror would like to welcome Sheenah as the guest writer.

________________________
Written by Sheenah Freitas

As a fantasy writer, sometimes I get asked, “Where do you come up with all of this stuff?” Though, to be fair, I think every writer gets asked that question a few times in their career. It all boils down to inspiration. Inspiration can strike anywhere and at any time.

For me, I get my inspiration through dreams or when I’m out and about. I’ve always had really vivid dreams that deal with magical realms or special powers. And often times when I’m out at the mall, I don’t really process what’s going on in my surroundings. There’s a good chance that I’ll end up daydreaming. I see people around me and I notice things, often minute things, but it’s sort of all jumbled up and my brain processes it as: that man looks like he could be a villain or I wonder if she has a secret life or that’s an odd looking item, I wonder if it used to belong to a witch and still has some semblance of powers within it.

If I’m suffering from writer’s block, often the inspiration that works best for me is to go hiking. Being surrounded by nothing but trees and natural landscapes is absolutely refreshing. You can just picture elves roaming around and nymphs skipping around to the nearest clearing to pick flowers. The landscape often finds itself back into my works, too. Experiencing the same sounds, lighting, smells, and foliage as my characters helps me with the description and atmosphere and hopefully helps make the world a believable place.

I suppose my brain, and other creative people’s brains for that matter, are just hardwired differently. We see the mundane and turn it into something less mundane. Why can’t pictures move like in Harry Potter and closets take you to a vastly different world where you learn you’re the ruler of a kingdom like in Chronicles of Narnia? Inspiration is everywhere around us. We just have to look and remember that seeing is not always believing.

My view and review:

The Chosen by Sheenah Freitaz
The Chosen by Sheenah Freitas is a Young Adult Fantasy Novel. The story revolves around the Zincian people of Earth's sister planet Zinc. Now before you begin to call this simply a science fiction book, take a closer look. The plot is riddled with magic and mystical revelations. The mystery and mythology make the reading most wonderful and spectacular. From the beginning, the reader is not lulled but yanked severely into this other world where a young girl's life is turned upside down. The characters quickly gain sympathy and the heat is on to figure out how this young girl will fare in her circumstances.

Sheenah has developed the characters beautifully and within only a few pages, Kaia will grab on to your heart. Kaia is a young girl that through trauma, and severe life altering experience, learns about her true destiny. I felt her youth and her pains from the very start and that depth continues throughout due to the wonderful writing of the author. The story continues to unfold and unraveling as Kaia makes her way to meet with those that lend her answers.

I found this fantasy novel to be brilliant and fun to read. It has a similar tone to The Iron Fey, if you are familiar with Julie Kagawa novels. The big difference here is The Chosen is not a tale of fairies. The journey surely takes us to another world with another civilization altogether and one with a mythical and mystical feel to it.

The Grimoire Chronicles by Sally Dubats

The Grimoire Chronicles: Veil Between Worlds
(book one)
by Sally Dubats
________________________________________

Seventeen-year-old Cassie leaves school for home one afternoon and encounters a beautiful boy with an enchanting voice who steals her life force then makes her forget the attack ever happened. For other girls the memory loss would be the end of the story, but Cassie is Wiccan and she uses her intelligence and authentic witchcraft to remember the truth. Her spell sets in motion a dangerous mind-blowing adventure that takes her to another dimension, the astral plane, where anything is possible and a perilous romance with Trenton blossoms.

Cassie learns that Trenton is a Siren. Ruthless, deadly, and elegant, the Sirens are an evolved species, a combination of the Muses, the Graces, and the Undead. They have influenced human art, music, and dance through the ages -- with a price, and Trenton’s family is renovating a decaying resort to open a school for teens gifted in the arts. A dangerous love triangle develops between Trenton, his intended Siren Match Iris, and his true Match Cassie, turning Cassie’s world upside down. Halloween looms and the veil between worlds thins. Stereotypes about witches break down when friends come to Cassie’s aid, and she must delve deeper into her knowledge of witchcraft to discover the High Priestess within. The tale culminates at midnight on Halloween, the Witches’ Sabbat called Samhain, in a desperate astral battle to save each other from Iris’s fury or be trapped on the astral plane forever.

At the heart of “The Grimoire Chronicles: Veil Between Worlds” is an incredibly fast-paced mystery with a cliffhanger (sometimes literally!) at the end of each short chapter. Grimoire is fantasy based on research, and in this case it is based on Wicca and Witchcraft, Greek mythology, ancient Hindu/Yogic techniques, and science. The rituals and spells in the book are real, and the story is fascinating -- whether you want to learn more about witchcraft, paganism, and earth-based religions or just get lost in a terrific book!

The illustrations in your book 'Trapped on Draconica' are amazing! Can you share with me about that?

The artwork is done by Alexis M Centeno, who is an American artist. I met her on the website Zuda whilst looking for an artist. I had plans to include artwork as well as text to give it a kind of “Graphic Novel” feel to it and Alexis’s artwork seemed perfect.

Alexis has been brilliant. She’s as dedicated to this book as I am and has really done well to bring the characters and story to life. She put her own spin on the characters and world and that really helped. In fact, her style of art helped me change my writing style a little to fit the piece. I consider her a co-creator of this book rather than just an artist and am thankful to be able to work with her.

When you are not writing, what do you like to do?

I work, much like any other person – but writing is what takes up most of my time outside of it. I love to write, but outside of that I like music, I play guitar and used to be in bands, though I do less of that these days. I also like watching history programs about Roman/Medieval times as I have a huge interest in that period of history.

What genre do you usually read?

I’m pretty open, but my first taste would probably be for sci-fi and fantasy – but I also like reading manga for it’s over the top nature. Currently, I’m reading the third book in the Song of Ice and Fire series (which inspired the Game of Thrones TV series) and I am really impressed at how detailed and expansive it is. It’s not an easy series to follow given the enormity of the world it’s set it – but if you give it a chance then I recommend it.

I also recently became a part time reviewer myself, reviewing up and coming and independent authors. I love having the chance to see what new talent is out there and if I can do my bit to help I will.

Do you have any favorite authors? Who and why?

In no particular order;
Douglas Adams – For being able to write comedic science fiction, but with a strong and believable story.
J.R.R Tolkien – For introducing me to the fantasy genre.
H.P Lovecraft – Because I loved the huge amount of strange characters and deities that he created.
Roald Dahl – He was the first author whose book’s I ever read and, in my opinion, the best children’s author to ever live. He was able to write stories that were really dark and somewhat disturbing, but could still make them acceptable for children. That is a skill very few authors have.
Joss Whedon – Simply because this guy taught me how to write strong female leads.
Terry Pratchett – Of all the authors in the world today, this is the one I have the most respect for. He is a beloved man that has created such a beautiful fantasy world with amazing characters. It broke my heart to learn that he was suffering from Alzheimer’s, but he’s doing his best to fight against it. He is a true inspiration and I admire him for his accomplishment.

How long did it take to write 'Trapped on Draconica'?

In total, including the artwork, about five years. I had originally planned for it to be a trilogy, but the last book only lasted a few pages. In the end, I put it all together and spent the next few years editing it and looking for an artist. It’s been a long time, but worth every moment.

What was your inspiration for your story?

I’ve always loved fantasy and mythology – even to the point where I dabbled in some Games Workshop games – so I guess it was natural that I would eventually try and write a story like that. However, growing up, I loved the stories Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland – the idea of a human from our world ending up in a fantasy world really appealed to me so I wanted to write a book around those lines. I think doing that added a different kind of spin to it and made it a little different to the usual swords and sorcery tale.

How did you come up with the characters?

If Terry Pratchett has taught me anything, it’s that characters in a fantasy world can still be believable and realistic if you give them enough emotional depth. I started out by looking at certain fantasy archetypes (ie, warrior woman, evil emperor, etc) and thinking “Ok, what can I do to make this character believable?” so that they didn’t end up just being stock characters. Again, anime and manga were a huge help for this as they often have a lot of great characters with outspoken personalities and emotional depth, but I also loved the cartoon shows of the 80’s for their goofy comedy, so pulled in some elements of that.

Again I have to congratulate Alexis’s designs for the characters. She really added her own spin on them and really went out of her way to design the characters in such a way that they fitted their personality, but didn’t look too clichéd.

What is your favorite character and why?

Personally I tend to gravitate more towards villains because I think a great villain can make a piece.

For the males, I’d pick Emperor Gothon, the main villain. At first, when you first see him, he’s your typical evil emperor guy that looks to try and take over the world. But (without giving spoilers) once you realise his intentions, you discover that there is more depth to his character than you first think. Also I think the costume design for Gothon was incredible and kinda puts Darth Vader to shame!

For the females, hands down it’s Zarracka, the villainess. I love this character, and from what I hear most who have read the book do to. She’s different from your usual femme fatales – in the sense that’s she’s really snobby, petulant and sometimes really goofy – but when she wants to be she can be really evil and scheming. I think Zarracka is a perfect 80’s cartoon villain, over the top, fairly silly, but at the heart a real witch. I plan to do more with this character in the next book to show she’s more than a villain.

Do you have any projects in the works or any teasers to share?

As hinted above, I have a sequel planned for this book, which hopefully should be out late next year. This one will be a little different and will have more of a feminist theme to it (at least that is my intention), but will still expand on the characters and how they’ve gone on since the first book. I also have some novella’s set in the world of Draconica (one of which is a prequel set around Gothon). I do plan to expand the world of Draconica a little more, because like any world there is always room to expand the universe and tell any number of stories.

I have also recently joined Lightning Strikes comics (http://lightningstrikecomics.com/)and have written a piece called Queller, out early next year. I aim to expand my writing skills as much as possible and will be spending the next year putting out as many stories as I can. My ultimate goal is to make a profession out of my writing – but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

A world without books?

Try to imagine, it's hard to do
with so many choices in front of you.

Information would be lost, with possibly
no interpretation, a lost city, a lost people,
a completely lost civilization.

Time.

No connection of, no recollection of, no traces
of, no traveling away from where you are.....
with words.
Time travel would seize. And would history even exist? What notes would be taken, what words
would be shared without books?

No intimacy with the pages, of crisp paper.
What about the scent of book stores
and libraries. Would you miss the leather bindings?

I would miss the leather bindings.

I would miss being read to as a child
or reading to my child as a Mother.

I would have been, and would still be...
empty... living in a void.

It would be a dark world, but not one of the fiction I love.
My darkness would be real, lonely, without thought.
No words to drive creative energy.
No pages to turn.
No learning.
No books.
NO hope.
No reading,
no dreams.

I love to read on my Nook
but I want it be known,
I adore reading period
and especially from a book.

Review: Red Winter

Red Winter

Sheriff Early Hardiman has seen a lot of bad things in his life, but nothing could have prepared him for the first Vampire to visit the Old West. When the snows come and the train stops and the passes are buried, there’s only one way to leave LonePine — boots up in a pine box. For Sheriff Hardiman, once one of the fastest guns in the West, it’s another four months of watching over the foolish and the foolhardy and praying for spring. Continue >>>>>
